March 31, 2002 – Walters State Community College was recognized as the Community College of the Year during the College System of Tennessee TBR SOAR Awards on Wednesday, March 30, 2022.
“With opportunities for Tennesseans to attend college at an all-time high thanks to Tennessee Promise and Tennessee Reconnect, the Tennessee Board of Regents will honor six outstanding students, faculty and staff members, and two colleges of the year in its third annual Statewide Outstanding Achievement Recognition (SOAR) Awards,” the TBR website explained.
“We’re very proud of Walters State,” said state Senator Steve Southerland, who attended the event with state Representative Rick Eldridge. Eldridge praised Hamblen County’s post-secondary options.
“We’re proud of Walters State and TCAT,” he said. “We’re way ahead of the curve with two great facilities right here in Hamblen County.”
WSCC President Dr. Tony Miksa was on hand in Nashville to accept the award. He thanked the WSCC team, faculty and staff for the great work they’ve done this year. “It’s important to recognize the work being done on campus,” he said.
Miksa thanked Hamblen County’s state legislative team and the TBR for the support they’ve given the college. “It’s a great thing,” he said. Miksa also thanked the students who have persevered through challenging times. “I appreciate our students,” he said. “It’s been some challenging years going through the pandemic, but they’ve held with us.”
